Artifact Explained -
This video shows me leading a jazz lesson where I have sequenced a learning of the swing style. To this point, I had sequenced going through jazz scales and listening to various recordings to hear the style and at this point we were practicing in a call and response manner. I usually led the exercise asking them to listen to the style and rhythm that I played with and try to copy it exactly. In this video, I had the lead alto player lead the exercise so that I could assess where the lead player was at as well as further assess the groups understanding of the style. We were fortunate to have a saxophone teacher in the room with us that day (Brandon Morse) who has a private saxophone studio in the Wichita area and runs several jazz ensembles. I had him lead the exercise as well so that the students had a chance to call and respond with a professional. It pushed them, but they started to get the style. These exercises transferred to the pieces we were working on wonderfully!
