Standard 3: The teacher of PK-12 music has skills in reading and writing music.
A music teacher must have acquired skills in reading and writing music that have developed to a level that is beneficial for teaching students and having them learn material properly. Teachers cannot be lax in any form of learning music, that including ear training, aural skills, notation, reading music, understanding scores, basic theory skills, etc. If a teacher neglects part of a wholesome music education and formation of skills, they neglect a way to reach out to students. To teach students correctly, a teacher must have the skills they are attempting to teach before heading into the classroom. Of course, there will always be room for refinement, however a teacher must be ready with the basics.
The standard includes aspects in the content and professional abilities such as teachers having skilled aural and music reading abilities along with being able to read many clefs and transpositions, conduct from many scores, provide aural feedback, and use outside sources to provide learning for the students such as listening examples. These are all skills that I have worked to refine throughout my collegiate career. I successfully passed three aural skills courses and was successful in passing my aural skills proficiency exam. I have worked to develop an ear for intervals so that I can sing a part from looking at the music without needing to listen to it or play it on an instrument before hand. My goal has always been to be able to identify rhythms and intervals at a proficient enough level that I can identify the basic melodic phrase for students without having to take much time in finding my own instrument. I have challenged myself throughout my musical career so far to learn different instruments in different transportations and learn how to read all clefs. My instruments include piano, clarinet, and tuba which covers the basics of treble and bass clef. I learned viola in college so that I would have a start at reading alto clef which has aided to my ability to read tenor and soprano clef.
These skills I have learned in college will directly impact my students because they positively affect my ability to be an effective teacher in the classroom. I have the necessary skills for quick error detection and correction which is nothing but positive for young musicians. If they did not have a teacher who could identify where they are having problems with the written music or even theoretical issues with original compositions, then they would not learn from their mistakes. That is why I have worked to refine my skills. I do not have much time in the classroom so I must have developed skills that allow me to work efficiently in ways that will benefit the students. With my aural skills and reading/writing skills I have worked to accurately provide feedback. Students will benefit from this because then they will be able to take useful information and add it to their own playing.
It is vital for teachers to have acquired reading and writing skills in music so that they can provide a wholesome education for their students. Without these skills, teachers would be doing a disservice to their students and shortchanging them on tools that would only benefit their learning and enhance the teachers ability to be effective. I have worked diligently to develop these skills so that I can be as effective as possible for my students at whatever age or level they may be.
