Standard 1: The teacher of PK-12 music has skills in pedagogy (planning, delivering instruction, and assessment)
for vocal, instrumental, and general music.
A teacher of PK-12 grade music must have knowledge of necessary pedagogy for teaching which has been developed through practice and learning to adequately teach students students according to their various levels of competency in accordance to their age. It is most important that music teachers have worked on building their skills in playing instruments for any level of music. This includes but is not limited to having basic singing knowledge, knowing how to perform on Orff instruments, and knowing how to start a student on any instrument in the youngest levels of band. Teachers must know what level of music and what degrees of challenges students. They must be aware of the standards and what students should be learning by the time they get to certain ages.
As a future music teacher, I feel like I fit this standard quite well. I have worked hard in my undergraduate to develop the necessary skills to teach at any level of music; from PK all the way through high school marching band. I understand how music works theoretically and technically and I feel confident putting those skills onto instruments and in my voice to help demonstrate to students how they should be performing and learning. I have studied the psychology of students of all ages and understand how they are developing so that I can give them proper material. Along with this, I understand how to pair students psychological development with the core music standards to optimize their learning. As a teacher, I would do anything and everything possible to make sure each student is getting the most appropriate music education possible.
I know that students will succeed in my classroom based on my abilities and skills. I am a very driven person towards making sure everything is done properly. If my job is to teach students and give them the best possible education, I will go to all measures to make sure they have everything they need to be successful. I’m an organized person and have experienced what it is like to stay on top of things for my students. I keep a very organized desk, room, book bag, etc. which demonstrates that I value a high level of organization for my students. I want them to have the best environment to be successful and feel safe whenever they walk into my classroom. I have experience making detailed lesson plans which is an important asset to my teaching because it helps provide structure for my students. I have taught classes and private lessons for students as young as preschoolers all the way through collegiate level. I understand what it takes to be prepared to teach students when they walk into my classroom. That is of the utmost importance to me; to make sure I am doing everything in my power to provide them the best education possible.
It is very important for music teachers to have a wide knowledge of the music pedagogy it takes to teach choral, instrumental, and general music for students from ages PK- 12th grade. When we leave the classroom we are the experts that young musicians are looking up to. As a music teacher, I must study and learn all levels of pedagogy so that I can teach with confidence. According to the standard, teachers must have a wide level of pedagogy developed and learned so that they can teach all music students according to the level of development they are at and what age group they are. I plan to be a music teacher who can do just that.
