This is a lesson where I integrated writing and observations skills (almost in a scientific way) for making observations about the Brazilian berimbau. The students have been working on problem solving skills for discovery, not just in music, as a way of understanding the content better. I had the students write down lots of observations and then use think-pair-shares with their neighbors for further understanding. I was able to monitor the discussion and guid their understanding from there. I also briefly integrated history and geography to help students identify where the berimbau was from as well its origin in Africa. We used a comparison and contrast to make discoveries about how the berimbau may make its sound in light of instruments that the students already knew.
