Artifact Explained -
This is a 1st grade lesson I taught to teach the concepts of Largo, Moderato, and Allegro tempos putting terminology to the movement and tempos they had learned of slow, medium, and fast in kindergarten. Knowing that the students would need several ways of engaging in this material, I had them do several activities to engage in the concept. They had been introduced to it before, so this was a practice lesson. We practiced coming into the classroom and moving to the beat with our own path while reviewing the terminology. I was then able to have them sit and do a compare and contrast for discovery about the tempo of moderato (We had done the other two the previous day). We worked as a class to come up with "equations" (and compared that to math!) about how terminology they already understood compared to the new concept. To further solidify the concept, we put the tempos in context of a song while showing the beat on specific places on the floor.
