The candidate uses understanding of differences in individuals, cultures, and communities to ensure inclusive learning environments that enable each learner to meet rigorous standards.
Music teachers must have the ability to understand the differences in cultures and communities and thus the individual student. Educators must be well versed in multiculturalism to ensure an inclusive learning environment that aids in the ability for every student to succeed in their studies. In a world that is much more accessible, we as teachers need to spear head the need to understand and respect all people and all cultures. With the technology we have today, students will be exposed to other cultures whether we show them or not. As teachers who understand the need to celebrate diversity and respect the differences, we have the chance and obligation to guide our students to a respectful understanding of each other.
I have been lucky to have many opportunities to make friends with people from other cultures and become involved in their family and community lives. One of my very best friends is Hispanic and I love coming to his house for supper! I attempt to always have an open mindset towards interactions with folks from other cultures (Reference artifact #1, "Diversity Experience). This open mindset is what I keep towards my students so that I can ensure a respectful and educationally appropriate mindset towards them. Along with understanding cultural diversity amongst my students, I try to remember that they have different likes and interests than me as the teacher. Thus, I attempt to keep a healthy balance of different culturally relevant and varying exercises to bring into the classroom (Reference artifact #2, "Greenday Warmup and artifact #3, "Coldplay Function Choral").
My students will benefit greatly from my open mindset and friendly interactions with people of varying cultures. In this way I keep my classroom and lessons open and respectful. Along with this, I keep myself involved with understanding what my students are interested in, such as their music (especially since it is a music classroom!) and finding ways to celebrate those interests in ways that still promote the standards of the lessons.
